What Is Exercise is Medicine?

Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) is a global health initiative led by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Its goal is to make physical activity assessment and prescription a standard part of clinical care, connecting patients with evidence-based resources regardless of their current fitness level or abilities..

EIM at UBC

The UBC Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIM-OC) program brings this initiative to the UBC Vancouver campus. Working closely with UBC Student Health Services and UBC Counselling Services, we connect students with qualified exercise professionals to promote physical activity across campus.

Our vision is for all campus and community members to discover, share, and adopt the principles of EIM, helping change the culture of physical activity and chronic disease prevention campus-wide.

Who Is Eligible?

This service is available to UBC students referred through Student Health at the Gateway Building or UBC Hospital.

What to Expect

When you come in for a consultation, a qualified exercise professional will:

  • Review your physical activity interests, goals, and any limitations with you
  • Build a personalized exercise prescription based on where you are and what works for your life
  • Follow up with you after two weeks to see how things are going

Consultations are free, confidential, and designed to meet you where you are, no fitness experience required.
